Saint Joseph Ballet made its long-awaited Los Angeles debut at the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theatre.  Twenty-eight dance students performed Presence, choreographed by Mark Haim, and 11 alumni performed A Seed by Founder and Artistic Director Beth Burns.

Presence looks at what makes for happiness.  The piece began in conversations choreographer Mark Haim had with students and parents about what sounds, smells, tastes, and sights make them feel happy.  With these recorded conversations, composer Alan Terricciano created a sound collage, including parts of a Bach Magnificat and new music he composed for and sung live by the Orange County Women’s Chorus.  Laugh out loud funny and tenderly personal, Presence builds in waves that fill the senses and make for happiness.  Presence premiered in June 2004 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

A Seed is like a primal ritual.  Luis Perez and other percussionists join in, performing on indigenous and pre-columbian instruments.  A Seed expresses a reverberating, irrepressible energy.  Saint Joseph Ballet alumni fly in from New York, Seattle, New Orlean,s and Tucson to re-unite in this signature work.  A Seed premiered in 1990 at Santa Ana City College.
